CANDELARIA FRANCO GUZMÁN

"I feel happiest when I knit. But I wonder: why do I knit alone, if I love teaching others?"
Candelaria was born and raised in Santa Cruz de Mompox, Bolívar. She began weaving fishing nets (cast nets) at the age of fifteen, inspired by watching her grandparents make their own fishing nets.
Over the years, Candelaria has expanded this practice beyond its utilitarian origins, transforming it into a versatile art form. In addition to fishing nets, she now creates hammocks, bags, baskets, wallets, and hats.

HEBERTO RAMÍREZ ANGULO
Potter
Master potter Heberto Ramírez Angulo (Mompox) still uses the potter's wheel his grandfather bought in 1901, when he was only 16 years old. Heberto is known as the last potter of Mompox. Fortunately, he won't be the last. A potter's wheel and kiln were recently inaugurated at the Mompox House of Culture, with the aim of continuing a tradition that was very strong during the colonial era and the early years of the republic. The master potter says that his father taught him the craft. Heberto learned by observing. As a child, he spent hours watching his father's hands create lions, elephants, flowers, palm trees, pots, men, women, and vases.
RAFAEL MARTINEZ
Potter
Born in Mompox in 1984, Rafael comes from a family of boatmen who provide ferry service across the Magdalena River, from El Palomar in the department of Magdalena to Mompox in Bolívar. Rafael has worked as a pottery instructor at the Mompox School of Trades, the José de la Luz Martínez School (Magdalena), and at SENA (National Learning Service). He holds a teaching degree and is a certified potter with extensive experience in teaching arts and crafts. He specializes in technical and pedagogical training, focusing on preserving ancestral techniques and developing artisanal skills in educational settings. Rafael is committed to cultural enrichment and hands-on learning. He finds his greatest joy in working with clay, teaching his craft to children and young people.
